The Benefits of All-on-4

All-on-4 implant-supported dentures are quickly becoming a popular choice among new and current denture-wearers alike thanks to the superior stability they offer compared to conventional dentures. Traditional dentures are removable and secured in place with an adhesive or suction seal. With All-on-4, the dentures are secured in place with four titanium posts placed throughout the jawbone. The posts are inserted during an oral surgery procedure. The denture clips to abutment pieces that sit on top of the implant posts. Implant-supported dentures can only be removed by a dentist.

As mentioned before, traditional implant-supported dentures use six to eight implant posts on each arch to support the dentures. In patients with inadequate bone density, a bone graft is performed to properly hold the implant posts. With All-on-4, two anterior implants are placed vertically down near the front of the mouth and two posterior implants are placed farther behind in the jaw, tilted at a 45-degree angle. The angling of these implant posts eliminates the need for bone grafting. In addition, placing fewer implant posts in the jawbone makes for a less invasive oral surgery procedure and faster recovery period.

Procedure Details

The first step of the All-on-4 procedure is to plan the functional and aesthetic aspects of treatment. This includes taking measurements of your mouth to determine the lengths of the crowns and bite placement. Dr. Hunter will use 3D imaging to create a computerized simulation of your treatment, including the precise placement of the implant posts for optimal results. He will also take impressions of your natural teeth to craft your replacement teeth.

Depending on your specific case, this step may require tooth extraction or bone shaping. Once the implants are in place, Dr. Hunter may place temporary dentures over them. It takes several months for the jawbone to heal and the implants to integrate with the surrounding gum tissue. Once this process is complete, you will return to our office so Dr. Hunter can replace your temporary dentures with your permanent restoration. Before you leave, we’ll explain how to care for your new dentures.
